Gender: Female
Age: 15

Personality: Mami is very much the mothering type, which her name is clearly a call-out to, being pronounced identically to "mommy." She has been a magical girl for the longest amount of time aside from Kyouko, and in every timeline she seems to act as a mentor and pseudo big sister to the new magical girls, taking them along with her to watch her fights, explaining both the ups and the downs of life as a magical girl, and counseling Madoka and Sayaka to take their time and think very carefully about their wishes, especially since that is a liberty that she didn't have. It's clear that she wants what's best for the other girls, and is trying her darndest to make the best of a bad situation. Unlike Kyouko, she does not seem as jaded by fighting witches, and continues to fight witch familiars-- something that saves human lives, but has no direct benefits for the magical girl in question. She is also willing to team up with other magical girls to fight the witches: something that is stated to be unusual in the highly competitive magical girl community. Sayaka calls her an "ally of justice."

However, despite her pleasant and nurturing external demeanor, on the inside, Mami has many problems of her own. She does not consider herself a role model, despite acting as a mentor, because her life is hard and incredibly lonely. In the main timeline, before meeting Madoka, she works completely alone, tirelessly saving the city from witches despite having no support system. She lives all by herself, and since she can't tell anyone else at school about being a magical girl, and because other magical girls don't tend to go for partnerships, she has no choice but to face her difficulties alone. She tells Madoka that she often cries a lot in her room, and she's embarrassed to have let her cool mentor facade slip.

Additionally, though she is undoubtedly the most mature of the main group, Mami is still very young and emotionally volatile. In one direction, when Madoka tells her that she will team up with her to fight witches together, she becomes so ecstatic that she lets her guard down, fighting sloppily and ultimately leading to her gruesome defeat. On the flipside of that, when she learns that witches are in fact magical girls who have lost themselves to despair, she completely breaks down, turning her weapon against her friends before they all succumb to that fate.

Canon Background: We first meet Mami in episode 1 as she introduces Madoka, Sayaka, and the viewer to the world of Magical Girls. She is something of a veteran, having been a magical girl for some time before the show started, and she explains how the process works. By forming a contract with Kyubey, the adorable mascot creature, a girl can have any wish granted, no matter how miraculous. In return, the girl must risk her life fighting witches, evil creatures that feed on human misery and can cause murders and suicides. It's not an easy life, but someone has to do it.

Since Madoka and Sayaka have been chosen by Kyubey to contract with him and become magical girls, Mami takes on the role of a mentor figure while they try to decide what to request with their wish. She takes them along as she hunts witches, showing them how dangerous the life of a magical girl is, but also being a symbol of justice as she takes on the forces of evil and makes it look very cool.

When Madoka asks Mami what she wished for when she contracted, Mami reveals that she had been in a terrible car accident when Kyubey came to her. She wished for life, but her parents were killed in the accident. She insists, however, that she doesn't regret her decision in the slightest, as the life she leads now is better than being dead.

And then she dies, so that sucks.

Mami's sudden end at the hands teeth of the witch Charlotte just goes to show that she was not exaggerating when she said that being a magical girl meant risking your life every day. Her death is also an important factor that dissuades Madoka from forming a contract with Kyubey, as immediately prior to that, Madoka had been about to wish simply to be a magical girl.

We get more background on Mami in episode 10 when it's revealed that Homura, another magical girl, is a time- traveler who has been reliving the past month over and over again to set things right. The viewer is given a brief glance of the prior timelines, in which Madoka and Mami had been working together a magical girl team. In one timeline, Mami, upon learning that magical girls in fact become the very witches they are tasked to fight, attempts to kill the other magical girls (and presumably herself) before that can happen, but she is taken out by Madoka before she can complete her sacrifice.

In the end, Madoka comes up with a wish that effectively rewrites the laws of the universe, turning her into a personification of hope which prevents magical girls from becoming witches, completely erasing every witch from history, past and future. Magical girls still exist in this universe, including a revived Mami, and they now fight creatures called "magical beasts," born from glitches in the fabric of the universe. It's still a difficult life, but it seems to be marginally better, at least.

Background (AU!Canon; HP): Mami was born and raised in the charming town of Burford, England, right in the heart of the picturesque Cotswalds area. She grew up in a family of devout Catholics, and followed in that faith, generally being an excellent example of the devoted and pious daughter.

And then one day when Mami was about eleven years old, her family was in a terrible car accident. Her parents were killed instantly, and, by all rights, Mami should have been as well. The paramedics who pulled her out of the wreck agreed that it was a miracle that she had survived. Even after she was brought to the hospital, she recovered from her injuries much more quickly than any of her doctors expected her to. Though she was deeply upset by the loss of her parents, she thanked God for her good fortune in being alive at all, and vowed to make it up to Him in some small way by doing what she could to help others.

Then, one day, a few days before she was released from the hospital, she recieved a visitor. It was a man she had never seen before, who wore strange clothes and presented her with a letter bearing a seal stamped in red wax. The letter told her that she had been accepted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and the man explained that it was very much not a hoax; that it was in fact the preeminent school in Europe for young wizards and witches such as herself, and that she would receive the very best in magical education if she chose to attend. He also told her that her magic was probably the reason she had survived the accident that had killed her parents.

Mami accepted the letter and the man's counsel graciously, but on the inside, she was devestated. She had been taught that witchcraft was something unholy and undesirable. To think that that was what was keeping her alive... That night, Mami decided that she would not live as a witch and bring more evil into the world. Surely taking her own life (the life of a witch) would be seen as a lesser sin than that.

However, her suicide attempt failed, and she continued to heal. Deciding that this must be another sign from God that she wasn't yet ready to understand, Mami steeled her resolve to do what she had promised and devote her life to helping others. She decided to attend Hogwarts after all, to learn about her powers so that she would not inadvertently use them for evil, and perhaps even manage to use them for good. After all, everything happens for a reason, and she had been a fool to think that being dead would be preferable to living the life she had been granted.

During her years at Hogwarts, she has learned that witches and wizards were (for the most part) not the evil people that she had once believed, and she threw herself into her new school life. But deep down, she still struggles with the conflict between her faith and her magic (and the fact that some witches and wizards are indeed quite evil), which prevents her from forming truly significant bonds with her classmates.

How would your character fit in to each House?

Gryffindor: Mami certainly has courage in spades. She risks her life daily to help people who have no idea what she does for them; most of them don't and will never know that she even exists. She admits that she is always scared when she fights, but she perserveres despite her fear, because that is the life she chose when she became a magical girl. She often continues to fight even when there is no direct benefit to her, if it will help other people. For example: witch familiars don't drop grief seeds (which magical girls need to "recharge their batteries," in a sense) until they've killed a human, so many magical girls will avoid fighting them until that happens. However, Mami chooses to fight them before they can take a life, preventing needless death at the expense of her own well-being.

Hufflepuff: Mami is very determined, from the moment she chooses to form a contract with Kyubey instead of accepting death, and everyday afterwards, despite the intense struggles she faces that leave her with no recourse but to cry alone in her room. She wears a brave face through all of it, presenting herself to the world as a kind and caring motherly type. She acts as a guide and mentor to the younger girls in the group, in order to prevent their lives from being as difficult as hers is. She also embodies the tolerance aspect of Hufflepuff, refusing to get involved in the usual competition that occurs between magical girls. Although there is a definite hostility between her and Homura, she abstains from confronting her directly, though she does warn that she won't back down if Homura continues to follow her.

Ravenclaw: Mami seems to be an intelligent young woman for the most part, although she doesn't exactly have a lot of screentime to explore that aspect. What I would say is Mami's most Ravenclaw-esque trait is her tactics in battle (under normal circumstances). Despite having a seemingly endless supply of rifles, including a gun at least twice as big as herself, when fighting a witch she chooses her shots carefully and (usually) doesn't overdo it. She's able to keep a cool head in the midst of battle, calculating her next move even when the enemy has suspended her upside-down with its tentacles.

Slytherin: If Mami has ambitions, we aren't shown them, as it seems that what she wants most out of life is to continue living. However, she does reveal some cunning and willingness to use sneaky methods to get her way. Seen especially in her dealings with Homura; she doesn't go for direct conflict, as mentioned earlier, but she strongly implies that things will not go well for Homura if she continues to follow them and try to interfere. After one battle, she offers Homura, who she knows has been following them again, half her spoils. While it could be a genuinely generous gesture, in context it comes off as gloating, as Mami shows off her superior experience and skills as a magical girl. In addition, as the oldest and most experienced of the group, she generally takes on the leadership role, acting as tactician and commander of the group.

Sample Journal Entry: If any of the students in fourth year or below need help with studying for their exams, I was considering organizing a study group and tutoring session in the library this weekend. That is, if it wouldn't disturb the older students. Otherwise, I suppose we could find somewhere else to hold it.

To those who are taking their OWLs and NEWTs soon, good luck. I'm sure you'll all do well if you try.

Sample Interaction Post in Third Person: Mami sat in front of the mirror in her dormitory, combing out her hair to get ready for bed. Most of her roommates were still down in the common room chatting, but she'd told them she was turning in early to get a good night's rest before her exams the next day. When her hair was finished, she looked into the mirror and sighed.

She'd been helping some younger students prepare for their exams earlier that day. She enjoyed helping out, especially when she had been in the same position as they were, not that long ago. She loved seeing them succeed at a spell they'd been struggling with, and the smiles on their faces when they realized they'd gotten it down. But sometimes...

"Wow, Mami, you're so good at this! I hope I can be as amazing as you someday!"

That kind of thing was hard for her to bear. She wouldn't want anyone to be like her, to struggle like she did every day. To have to wonder what their parents would think, if they could only see them now, or what would happen when they died.

Nightly routines finished, she got up and climbed into her bed, pulling the curtains closed and burying her face into her pillow. She didn't want her roommates to worry about her, if they heard her crying.
